Boards, Committees and Commissions

The City of Manassas has over 350 citizens serving on approximately 40 boards, committees, and commissions. These boards provide a wide variety of valuable technical, advisory, administrative, and judicial services to the city and its residents. Included are multi-jurisdictional boards and authorities that provide specific administrative direction to service providers in the Northern Virginia area covering diverse topics. Serving on a board, committee, or commission is a rewarding experience and an excellent way to make a personal contribution to the city's growth.
The Appointment Process
Appointments to boards, committees, and commissions are made monthly by the Manassas City Council at a regular council meeting following the monthly meeting of the council personnel committee.

Length of service on the boards, committees, and commissions varies from one to five years, depending on the specific board, committee, or commission. There are also several that have its members serve at the pleasure of council. These terms are indefinite.
To be appointed to a board, committee, or commission in the City of Manassas, an individual must:
  • Be a city resident (unless stated otherwise in the by-laws of a particular board, committee, or commission)
  • Submit an application to the clerk's office
  • Not be delinquent in any taxes, fees, or fines due the city
Once an application is received in the Clerk's office, the applicant's request is acknowledged and he/she is notified of the next meeting of the Council Personnel Committee, held monthly, the 3rd Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the mayor's office. At this meeting, applicants are briefly interviewed by the Council Personnel Committee; applications are presented to the council in a closed session at council's next regular meeting, with appointments being made at that regular council meeting. The applicant is then notified in writing of the appointment, along with the length of term and expiration date.

If an application is received for a board, committee, or commission that does not have a vacancy, it is held until a vacancy occurs. The applicant is then contacted and an interview is scheduled with the Council Personnel Committee at its next regular meeting.
