The City of Manassas Park recently completed its first Active Transportation Plan, which addresses existing gaps in the City’s bicycle and pedestrian network and identifies recommended improvements to create a more walkable and bikeable community.

 




Prince William County adopted the latest version of their Comprehensive Plan in December 2022. The plan includes several mobility maps, including the Roadway Plan Map, Countywide Trails Map, and Transit Connectivity Map. The Route 28 Bypass project is currently in the design phase. Regional Agencies

The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) is the federally-designated metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the Washington metropolitan area. The TPB provides a regional framework and forum for coordination on transportation policy and investments. The TPB also provides technical resources to member jurisdictions for studies and analyses that aid in decision-making.

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) is responsible for long-range transportation planning in Northern Virginia and provides funding for regional transportation projects. NoVA Gateway is a new tool that provides access to the latest updates for NVTA-regionally funded projects.

In December 2022, NVTA adopted the latest edition of TransAction, the long-range transportation plan for Northern Virginia. TransAction is used to evaluate potential region-wide impacts of numerous projects, including transit, bike and pedestrian, roadway, transportation technologies, and more.

OmniRide provides local bus, commuter bus, carpool, vanpool, and ridesharing services in Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. In 2019, OmniRide began developing a Strategic Plan to help shape the agency’s transportation services for the next decade.

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) provides commuter rail service between Manassas and Washington, D.C.

In June 2022, VRE commenced their System Plan 2050 update, through which VRE is looking to expand daily trips and offer services beyond traditional commuter rail, including non-peak and weekend service.

State Level

 

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) is a 17-member board that is appointed by the governor to oversee Virginia’s transportation policies, projects, and initiatives – including the SMART SCALE program.

The CTB allocates public funds to transportation projects over six fiscal years, resulting in the Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP), which is updated annually and administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Opportunities for public input are held in the fall and spring during the initial development of the SYIP and after the release of the draft SYIP.

 

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is the state agency responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges and tunnels. The department is also responsible for statewide transportation planning efforts.

VTrans is Virginia’s statewide transportation plan, which lays out the overarching vision and goals for transportation in Virginia along with strategic actions to achieve them.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) works with rail and public transportation stakeholders to provide service throughout Virginia and promote transportation options to the general public, businesses, and community decision makers.

DRPT updated the Virginia Statewide Rail Plan in 2022, which provides long-term guidance to ensure that Virginia’s rail needs are addressed, the public is educated on current rail issues, policies for future rail investments are consistent, and rail transportation continues to be a safe, economical, and environmentally friendly mode choice.

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is responsible for promoting, sustaining, and expanding the availability of passenger and commuter rail service in Virginia.VPRA has joined together with DRPT to lead the Transforming Rail in Virginia Initiative, which aims to separate passenger and freight rail operations along key corridors across Virginia to provide more reliable service across all rail modes. The Long Bridge project is a key component of this initiative, as it will create greater railroad capacity between Virginia and the District of Columbia while alleviating rail congestion between passenger and freight modes.
