Recently, Lead Service Lines have been a topic of national news as an issue that degrades drinkable water quality. The EPA has mitigated the effects of lead and copper on drinking water by establishing drinking water standards to protect public health. The most recent revision to the rule protects water quality by requiring public water systems to track and address service lines within their distribution system. The City of Manassas has been on a reduced monitoring schedule since 2012 due to consistently having lead and copper levels below the contaminant level goals. Regardless of previous water quality results, the new regulations require all water providers to inventory and document all service lines within their distribution system by October 2024. If it is determined that there is a lead service line the City will need to document a replacement program for both public and private service lines.

How to check your water service line material
The City’s water mains are not made of lead. However, the water service line running from the water main to your home needs to be checked.  We will be checking all lines leading to your home before December 2024.
