Plastics-Guide for Recycling
Confused about plastic recycling?
Single stream recycling adds various plastics that are not recycled in traditional programs. So many people become confused and have a tendency to just throw in all types of plastics. Use this guide to determine if the plastic and plastic film that you have is actually recyclable in the City of Manassas. If the plastic film that you have is not listed here, please contact the Manassas Trash Line (703-257-8252) for guidance, or just put it in the trash.
Plastic Film that can be recycled:
- Grocery bags
- Empty and clean produce and bread bags
- Plastic wrappers from paper towels, toliet paper, napkins, and bottled water
- Plastic wrappers on newspapers
- Drycleaning bags
NO to this type of plastic film:
- Compostable or biodegradable plastic bags
- Cling wrap such as Saran wrap
- Sandwich or food storage bags
- Prepackaged food bags such as salad or vegetable bags
- Black or brightly colored plastic bags
- Any type of plastic that is contaminated with food waste or grease
- Colored plastic film such as candy, cereal or food wrappers
Please do not just throw individual plastic bags into your cart. Put them in another grocery bag and then fill that bag. Tie it up and then recycle it! Individual bags mess up the automatic machinery.
Plastic forks, spoons and knives are NOT recycable.

- plastic flower pots
- plastic toys
- plastic coolers
- plastic drums
